Effects of Answer-Sheet Format on Arithmetic Test Scores

LINDQUIST (1964) has suggested two general criteria against which the design of answer sheets for tests may be judged: 1. The design should minimize the effect of irrelevant factors on test scores, i.e., mechanics of answer sheet use must not influence the test’s validity; and 2. Within the limits of the first criterion, the answer sheet should be as convenient to administer and mark, and as economical to use as possible. Lindquist properly emphasized the first criterion. Its implications would naturally vary with the nature of the examinees and scoring system as well as with the purpose of the test. Despite the obvious importance of the suggested criteria, the widespread use of separate
