The Use of Mathematical Models and Computers in Treatment Evaluation

In a paper (1) delivered to the 1982 Medical Informatics Conference in Dublin, we described how a computerised data storage, retrieval and analysis system was developed for clinical research use in a special medical oncology unit. At that time, the system was implemented on main-frame computers. A 3-year project, funded jointly by the Department of Health and Social Security and the Department of Trade and Industry, is now underway to develop a (desk-top) micro-computer-based system to perform the functions now available on main-frame. It will do so in a more effective and user-friendly manner than in the past and will have sufficient flexibility to meet the specific needs of a variety of clinical environments.
