Primary ovarian pregnancy and the intrauterine device.

5 new cases of ovarian pregnancy are reported. One of these was associated with an in situ intrauterine device (IUD). A review of the English literature for 8.5 years prior to July 31 1971 disclosed 71 additional cases of ovarian pregnancy. 12 of these were associated with an in situ IUD. Thus 13 cases (or 17% of this new series of 76 cases) of primary ovarian pregnancy were associated with an in situ IUD. The IUD appears to have no contraceptive effect against ovarian pregnancy. However a large percentage of possible intrauterine and tubal pregnancies are prevented by the IUD.(Authors modified)
