A New Driver-Assistance System Based on Laser and Camera

In this paper, a new advanced driver assistance system based on a camera and a laser is presented, the aim of which is not only to detect pedestrians before the moving vehicle but also to give the exact distance between the pedestrians and the moving vehicle. At the same time, the system gives drivers forewarning by an EasyARM development board. The proposed system is tested in various environments and traffic situations. The results show that the error between the measuring distance and the real distance is smaller than 0.5m, the accuracy of detecting pedestrian is more than 90%, and the detecting speed can be 20 frames per second; furthermore, the system can give the driver useful signals in time in order to avoid collision.
