Realization of a SPWM inverter for multi-phase induction motor drives

The interest in multi-phase (number of phase higher than three) machines for high performance applications has been growing in recent years due to their potential advantages over three-phase machines. This paper presents an approach to implement sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) in a multi-phase inverter. A universal multi-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) is constructed, which is based on a digital experimental platform controlled by DSP and FPGA. SPWM technique is chosen and realized in this multi-phase VSI. The mathematical model of nine-phase concentrated winding induction machine is indicated and the proposed SPWM scheme is tested on this nine-phase concentrated winding AC induction machine. The experiment results show that the SPWM VSI discussed in this paper benefits from its simplicity and flexibility for a multi-phase induction motor drive system.
