Performance optimization of hybrid RAMAN-EDFA based WDM-FSO under adverse climatic conditions

Abstract In comparison with the fiber optics, free space optics (FSO) has proven many times more cost effective for number of telecommunication application. It has attracted lot of research due to its wider bandwidth, easy installation and low maintenance cost. To increase the transmission capacity, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is considered as most suited method for optical fiber system. But a WDM-FSO system is more vulnerable to the attenuation effect due to climatic conditions. In this paper, hybrid Raman-EDFA optical amplifier configuration is being used to make the module more power efficient. This complete proposed module for communication system is analyzed for various climatic conditions like clear weather, haze, light and heavy rain. Further model performance is also compared with the existing results available in literature. It is clear that proposed model shows improved results as measured by the bit error rate (BER) and Q-factor at receiver end.
