Nonsequential double ionization of D 2 molecules with intense 20-fs pulses

The kinetic-energy distribution of D{sup +} fragments obtained from the ionization of D{sub 2} molecules with intense 20-fs pulses includes a high-energy component extending up to {approx}10 eV. These fragments are only present for linearly, or slightly elliptically, polarized light. Both the maximum kinetic-energy and the ellipticity dependence are consistent with nonsequential double ionization caused by recollision.
