Abstract The dynamic programming approach of decomposing a problem into smaller subproblems called stages, which are in turn solved sequentially, is illustrated with the aid of a firm which experiences a seasonal staffing problem. Although not a technique, the general approach can provide an intuitive aid to solving multi-stage problems.
