ADAPTIVE CONTROL AT AN ISOLATED INTERSECTION - A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOME ALGORITHMS

Four traffic control algorithms and an optimised fixed-time were compared by field measurement and by simulation under different traffic condition on an intersection of a Parisian suburb:- vehicle interval, volume density, aero-occupancy, and Miller's algorithm. First of all, some algorithms were modified in order to obtain satisfying operation under any traffic conditions. Then the parameters were adjusted by means of the simulation model and field measurements. Two methods of field measurement were developed: an automatic method based on queue-length measurements by means of detection loops, and a manual method measuring travel times. The obtained results comply in a satisfying way with those of simulation. In particular, they prove that Miller's algorithm is the most efficient for any traffic volumes. (Author/TRRL)
