Study on the Yaw-Roll Coupling Simulation of Vessel Course Changing under Large Rudder Deflection

In order to further study the yaw-roll coupling mechanism of large degree vessel course changing, the maneuvering simulation tests under various conditions are performed based on the nonlinear ship motion mathematical model. The results show that during large rudder deflection course changing, the yaw and the roll motions of the ship have strong coupling effects, the roll amplitude has positive correlation with the yaw amplitude. Therefore, it is pointed out that large amplitude roll motion will cause the phenomenon of yaw motion phase lag and deviation from the reference heading; in the case of excessive roll motion, large amplitude rudder deflection and maneuvering acceleration will lead to the swift loss of stability and broaching.
