Chapter 9 Membrane Bioreactors: Theory and Applications to Wastewater Reuse

Abstract Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) combine biological and membrane treatments to effectively remove contaminants from wastewaters. As such, MBRs are ideally suited for wastewater reuse applications. The present chapter provides a general overview of MBRs, describing the basic fundamental processes that govern the performance of these systems, as well as discussing the expected removal efficiencies that can be achieved for different groups of contaminants of concern. Recent published literature on the use of MBRs for wastewater reuse applications is summarized and tabulated in an easily referenced format.
