Development of 900 MW coal-fired generating units

The CEGB now has 64 large generating units of 500 MW or 660 MW which are fossil-fuelled. These units form the backbone of the British power system but they are now of relatively aged designs. Following a review, it was decided to increase unit size of new generators to 900 MW. The author discusses the CEGB study and then describes in detail the plant specifications proposed as a result of the study. Station engineering, costs and future developments are also discussed.
