Modelling the lignin peroxidase LIII of phlebia radiata using a knowledge‐based approach

White‐rot fungi degrade lignin more rapidly and extensively than other microbes studied. The breakdown of lignin by these fungi is mediated by ligninolytic enzymes including lignin peroxidases. The catalytic properties of a number of peroxidases have been extensively studied but the crystal structure of only the yeast cytochrome c peroxidase is known. Hydrophobic cluster analysis (HCA), a method for comparing proteins with low sequence homology, suggests that peroxidases are evolutionally related.
