Soil/machine interactions in zero-tillage for cereals and raspberries in Scotland

At three contrasting sites the substitution of herbicides for cultivations to control weeds in cereals and in raspberries resulted in marked changes in soil physical properties. These changes were largely associated with the compactive effects of wheel traffic. The properties of uncultivated soils are considered in relation to cereal drill design and the need for further research is indicated.
