1 PER CENT CHROMIUM STEEL

This chapter discusses 1 percent chromium steel. It discusses the chemical and physical properties of the steel. It is a general-purpose steel that may be heat treated to produce a tensile strength of 45 tons/sq.in. and upward, depending on the section size, with good ductility and resistance to shock. It possesses good resistance to abrasion and is also suitable for flame or induction hardening to develop a hard-wear resistance surface. It is used in the automobile industry for gears, connecting rods, steering levers, spindles, axles, and crankshafts. It is also used for spanners, hammers, socket wrenches, and similar small tools. On account of its superior wear resistance to plain carbon steel, it is used for agricultural machinery parts; lining plates and for blades for handling cement and abrasive dust; lining plates, paddles, and drums for concrete and tar mixers; valve cages and sleeves for concrete pumps; excavator cutting blades and teeth, elevator links, and pins etc.
