A Critical Review of the Impact of Knowledge Management on Higher Education

Universities have always been in the knowledge business per se. Even if they are acknowledged as having different missions, all are closely related to the management of knowledge. Nowadays, taken into account Lisbon Agenda and the Bologna process, European universities are at the forefront of changes. The challenges that they face urge them to incorporate knowledge management practices in order to help them enhance their functions and be more competitive and transparent. This paper reviews the impact of knowledge management on higher education institutions and it investigates aspects such as missions of universities and knowledge management, the benefits for universities when adopting knowledge management and examples of implementing KM practices by universities.
