The construction industry in China : its image, employment prospects and skill requirements

Documents recent changes in the organization and regulation of the construction sector in China. Analyses the impact of these changes upon the construction labour force, the terms and conditions of employment, health and safety, training and the acquisition of skills. Conclude that in China (as elsewhere in the world today) construction employment is going through a period of transition, from the ‘Iron Rice Bowl’ and ‘Fixed Workers’ towards flexible, short term contracts and labour-only contracting.
