Material figures of merit for non-linear optics

Figures of merit are developed for materials possessing both second-order and third-order non-linear optical properties. These merit figures are then evaluated and tabulated for a number of materials and material classes widely used in existing non-linear optical applications. Particular attention is also paid to the possibilities of waveguide fabrication using non-linear materials as this is vital in integrated optic applications.
