Validation of experimental data in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Abstract Fe, Ag and polymer coated Pt electrodes were investigated using a FFT impedance spectrometer which operates with a sum of properly defined sine waves as a perturbation. Based on an analysis of the discrete response spectra, it is possible to discuss the validation of the measured impedance data. New frequencies are observed in a number of cases, and their distribution gives information about possible causes for impedance spectrum distortion, eg about a poor linearity and/or instability of the electrode interphase during the measurement. In some cases it is possible to correct the measured data in order to obtain valid impedance spectra.
