WAVE ESTIMATION THROUGH SHIP MOTION MEASUREMENT

Full-scale ship motion measurements were carried out on the ro/ro ship M/S AIDA during 1992-1993. The ship motion records together with other available information were used to estimate the wave conditions occurring during the measurements. For this purpose, a mathematical formulation for wave estimation, the so- called variation-method was used. A comparison of the results using this method and another straightforward method is presented. The wave estimations based on the full-scale motion measurements show that the estimation accuracy is sensitive to the occurrence of mixed seas and to the wave encounter frequency with respect to the types of measured responses. These problems and further developments are discussed.
