Anomalous slip in Mo-5 at.% Nb and Mo-5 at.% Re alloy single crystals

Abstract Single crystals of Mo-5 at.% Nb and Mo-5 at.% Re have been deformed in compression at 77 K. Anomalous slip was observed to occur for orientations X≲0° in the case of the niobium alloy and for orientations X≲-10° for the rhenium alloy. These results are in direct contrast to those found for other body-centred cubic metals where anomalous slip is observed. Here both substitutional and interstitial alloying are found to destroy anomalous slip.
