A distinctive approach to enhance the utility of laboratories in Indian academia

The three kinds of laboratories in Indian Engineering Institutions are Conventional Labs, Virtual Labs and Remote labs. It is consistent across all branches in Engineering Institutions that the laboratory infrastructure is significantly underutilized due to factors such as security, timings, available working days etc. In addition to this, the student touch-time with a laboratory is significantly low because of the student to experimental set up ratio, availability of timings and working days. An established remote lab could offer a platform which can aid the students to access the lab beyond the limitations posed by the conventional labs. It can also serve to realize the functionality of systems with different specifications, make or model for a given requirement when designed aptly. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of remote labs in Indian Engineering Institutions from academic course-defined experiments to research and industrial consultancy requirement.
