Development of a Steam Generator and Calorimeter for Property Measurement at Advanced Conditions

The development of a once-through steam generator and calorimeter to obtain measurements of the specific heat capacity at advanced conditions is described. The construction and operation of the steam generator to produce 14 g/s at 70 000 kN/m2 and 750°C is detailed. The feasibility of using a differential calorimeter was investigated by measurements at 6000 kN/m2 and 400°C. The heat leak correction was found to be larger than anticipated owing to the heat leak being mass flow dependent. This was possibly due to operation at transitional Reynolds numbers. Some methods of determining the heat leak correction are described.
