Optimizing the Multiple Injection Settings on an HSDI Diesel Engine

Common-rail diesel injection system flexibility enables several injections per cycle. On HSDI diesel engines, this potential is currently used to drive a pre-injection (mainly for reducing combustion noise), a main injection and a post-injection (intended for pollutant emissions post-treatment). The existing injector control is an electro-magnetic one, and has the following limitations: Injecting very small quantities with a good shot to shot stability is difficult. The dwell time between consecutive injections cannot be reduced below a minimal threshold because of electronic and hydraulic response times.
