Smart sensors: when and where?

Abstract Silicon as a sensor material is very promising, because it permits the integration of the sensing element and the signal-processing circuit on one chip, the so-called ‘smart sensor’. An overview of physical transduction effects on silicon, presently available integrated sensors, desirable on-chip signal processing fucntions and academic and industrial results in the field of smart sensors will be presented.
