Reply to Matthaei et al.: The p150 isoform of the RNA editing enzyme Adenosine Deaminase 1 is required for embryogenesis

Matthaei et al. (1) raise the possibility that specific targeting of the p150 isoform of the RNA editing enzyme Adenosine Deaminase 1 (ADAR1) may have resulted in the generation of a hypomorph of the p110 isoform, thereby generating a functional double deletion similar to previous Adar1 gene disruptions (2, 3). On this basis, they question our conclusion that the p150 isoform of ADAR1 is required for embryogenesis.
