The primary purpose of this chapter is to make some useful distinctions between job skills and job competences. Inevitably the criteria for making these distinctions will be relative and loose rather than rigorous. The operational significance of the differences is all that counts, however, and should be found in useful extensions to concepts and practices in job analysis and specification, training and assessment, possibly in selection, and certainly in career planning.
