TRANSIENT SOUND FIELD OF SIMPLE ARRAYS OF CIRCULAR PISTONS

Abstract : The problem of acoustic radiation from a circular piston with arbitrary velocity in a plane, rigid baffle is used as the basis for a study of transient effects in the near field of simple, steered arrays. Several specific examples are considered, and the total sound pressure is calculated as a function of time in an attempt to answer certain questions about possible undesirable effects of transients in Sonar arrays. Although the examples are quite limited, it can be tentatively concluded that transients in the piston velocities, rather than propagation effects, tend to control the development of the sound field, and that cavitation is not likely to be initiated by transient effects.
