TEACHING ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS USING PERSONAL COMPUTER MOVIES

Personal Computer Movies (PC Movies) deliver instruction of course content and application of specific skills. They are simple, flexible, and powerful multimedia applications that turn a personal computer (PC) into a VCR. Students view instructor-made movies on their PC at a convenient time and place. This paper discusses the development and making of PC Movies, the uses of PC Movies in teaching accounting, specifically an undergraduate Accounting Information Systems course, and student reaction to the use of this tool. Each semester instructors make choices about the allocation of course time and resources to accomplish learning objectives. These decisions involve choosing material to "cover" in the lecture versus coverage by some alternative method. In the past, alternative methods included reading in textbooks or completion of homework problems designed to teach material. Today the availability of technology allows more options for presenting course content. This paper discusses a technology tool that allows presentation of content by the instructor without using class time. The specific tool, a Personal Computer Movie (PC Movie), is easy to create by the instructor and easy for students to use. Advances in Accounting Education, Volume 4, pages 119-138.
