Equilibrium shape of a small particle in contact with a foreign substrate

Abstract A general solution has been developed for predicting the equilibrated shapes of small particles resting upon solid substrates. The solution describes the dependence of the particle shape upon the anisotropy of the surface tension of the particle and upon the binding between the particle and the substrate. These capillary forces can be determined from the shapes of small particles under certain specified conditions. The results of some studies of the behavior of silver films on BeO substrates are interpreted in terms of this shape theory.
