Urban energy transitions, poverty, and the environment : understanding the role of the urban household energy in developing countries

The purpose of this study is to systematically analyze the dynamics of inter-fuel substitution in urban areas of developing countries, along with exploring the feasibility of substituting kerosene, LPG, or electricity for wood based fuels. To accomplish this task the study examines the causes of inter-fuel substitution, the impact of inter-fuel substitution in urban equity and quality of life, and the environmental problems associated with rapid increases in demand for wood in urban areas. The research includes a formal analysis of consumer behavior and how it is affected by urban fuel policies, urban energy availability, and socioeconomic characteristics of households within urban areas. The study also includes an examination of the value of fuel wood compared to alternative commercial fuels within different urban environments, including the foreign exchange implications of importing or producing commercial forms of energy for household use. Finally, the analysis examines the impact that inter-fuel substitution has on urban income distribution and poverty.
