The performance, fuel economy and even emissions of the gasoline engine can be improved by adopting HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjustment) and DVCP(Dual Variable Cam Phasing). But Strip-down method test showed increased friction by 30% when HLA and DVCP were applied. To overcome this side effect, the valve spring force and oil pump capacity on the engine friction were optimized in this study. When the valve spring force was decreased by 30% and oil pump capacity was reduced by 20%, the engine friction was reduced by 10% and the fuel economy was improved by 1.5%.
