Analysis and design of a Linear Electro-Mechanical Actuator for a High Lift System

Linear Electro-Mechanical Actuators (LEMA or EMA) are becoming increasingly used in various areas and locations around the More Electric Aircraft (MEA). One application following this trend is the High Lift System. Several system configurations have been designed and evaluated, then focused on the more suitable EMA which is proposed in this document. The design philosophy, actuator configuration, and selection of motor to meet the dynamic loads, bearings, ball screw & sensor are discussed. Design verification of critical components like ball screw and motor for their safety aspects is explained. Details of fault tolerance management and the actuator qualification program are also covered. Preliminary test results confirm the performance and readiness of the prototype.
