Trends in child mortality in the developing world: 1960 to 1996.

This document reports trends in child mortality in the developing world during 1960-96. Divided into four sections this report updates the estimates on infant and under-5 mortality for 94 countries using additional information not included in the past report of the UN International Childrens Emergency Fund and using a slightly modified methodology. Following an introductory section section II describes the data sources and the methodology used for trend fitting and for estimating the number of deaths that occurred under age 5 in 1996. Section III uses the results of the country- or area- specific analyses to draw some broad conclusions about rates of decline of under-5 mortality in the developing world since 1960. Finally section IV presents the results for each country or area. Appendix I shows the new data sources used for this report. Appendix II shows the deaths of children under 5 years of age in 1996.
