Multifrequency SAR observations of ocean surface features off the coast of Norway

Simultaneous P-band, L-band and C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images collected by the JPL AIRSAR system off the coast of Norway reveal surface features associated with presence of slicks, ocean fronts, internal waves and ship wakes. The features observed in these three radar bands are markedly different, and in most cases these differences are in agreement with theoretical predictions. All three bands contain some useful information and the interpretation of each image is assisted by an examination of the others. However, the single band which appears to contain the most information is the L-band.
