RECONSTRUCTION OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION OF TWO RUNWAYS USING HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE AT HOBBY AIRPORT

The intersection of Runways 12R-30L and 4-22 at Hobby Airport was more than fifty years old. The pavement had deteriorated very badly and was woefully inadequate to take the heavy pounding of aircraft. This intersection receives about 95 percent of the total aircraft traffic at Hobby Airport because these two runways are the only two ILS runways. Therefore, this intersection needs to be a heavy duty pavement. Since Runway 17-35 was the only other runway capable of carrying commercial airline traffic, this intersection was constructed on a fast track basis. Working around the clock, they reopened it to aircraft traffic within sixteen days. This required the use of high performance concrete.
