Microcontroller Compatible Clock Chip Design Using Field Programmable Gate Array

The design and implementation of a microcontroller-compatible real-time clock using a field programmable gate array are presented. The advantage of rapidly prototyping an IC chip design according to user-defined specifications is demonstrated. The chip design is directly interfaced with 10 seven-segment light-emitting diodes for displaying time and calendar information. Translating the clock function to an external peripheral allows the microcontroller to perform other tasks more efficiently. The relatively short cycle time to develop a product from concept to the final chip is described. >
