On theUse ofHierarchicalModulations for Robust Video TransmissionoverPower Line Medium

Realtimetransmission ofcompressed videodata overpowerlinechannels isa challenging taskbecause ofthe severecharacteristics ofthepowerlinetransmission medium. Several techniques havebeeninvestigated recently tomakea compressed videobitstream robust tothechannel distortions. In thispaper,we consider thebenefit ofusinghierarchical transmission forerrorresilience. We propose anoriginal video transmission schemebasedonlayered videocodingcombined withunequal errorprotection. Here,unequal errorprotection is achieved usinga hierarchical multi-carrier modulation scheme basedon hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation. In particular, we propose a hierarchical bitandpowerallocation algorithm specific tohierarchical MCM. Somesimulation results arepresented toshowtheinterest ofapplying unequalerror protection byhierarchical coding oflayered video bitstreams.
