An Adaptive Backstepping Coordinated Excitation and STATCOM Control for Power Systems

A new adaptive controller design for the coordinated generator excitation and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) of an electric power system to improve the stability and performance is proposed for this study. The idea of the proposed control method is extended to a power system with a non-strict feedback form. The main differences between the new technique and the classical technique are that a parameter estimation construction and an additional nonlinear gain term are introduced. In this study, the method is applied on a single-machine infinite bus (SMIB) power system with STATCOM when some parameters are assumed to be unknown. Then, the developed strategy with the new parameter estimation is used for stabilizing the SMIB power system. The simulation results indicate that based on the dynamic stability properties and parameter estimation, the presented control provides better performances compared to the classical adaptive control. In addition, they show that the performance of the proposed controller is almost similar to that of the full-information controller with precise information of parameters.
