Optimal Operation of Resilient Microgrids During Grid Outages

In the event of grid interruptions, micro-grids (MGs) can play significant roles by ensuring continuous and cost-effective power supply. In this paper, a grid-tied MG scheme for a hospital is optimized that can adequately sustain a prolonged outage. The simulation result shows that the photovoltaic (PV) system works well with the battery storage unit using the least service of an existing backup generator and meets the entire critical load demand in the absence of a grid connection. Results also reveal that the proposed system achieves substantial economic savings compared to the business as usual case.
