An improved OPTA fingerprint thinning algorithm based on neighborhood searching

In the study of the fingerprint thinning, some problems in the OPTA fingerprint thinning improvement algorithm are significant. For example, the image is not smooth; many burrs are produced in the thinning fingerprint image; the thinning quality is not perfect. A new design proposal based on OPTA improvement algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the deletion templates and construction templates are designed and refined as a unique model of table look-up and index by taking OPTA algorithm as the core idea. Then, a point is searched and judged in the look-up table to check if it should be deleted by computing the neighborhood of reference points. Simulation results finally show that the processed fingerprint image is smooth and it has the complete thinning, the skeleton is close to the centerline of the dermal ridge with no burr, the inquiry speed is fast. And it is a successful algorithm for fingerprint thinning.
