Reducing accidents between construction vehicles and cyclists

In recent years more than half of all cycling fatalities in London, UK have involved a heavy goods vehicle, despite such vehicles making up just 4% of road traffic. A disproportionate number were construction vehicles. Transport for London therefore commissioned the 2013 Construction logistics and cyclist safety (Clocs) report and has since worked with the construction industry to reduce the risks posed by its vehicles to cyclists and other vulnerable road users. As described in this paper, the ongoing Clocs programme has three work streams: improving new and existing vehicle safety, addressing the safety imbalance within the construction industry, and encouraging best practice through adoption of national standards. Over 60 organisations including vehicle manufacturers, construction logistics clients, operators, regulatory and enforcement bodies actively steer the programme, representing a united response to road safety across the industry which aims to save lives.
