Welding assisted riveting hybrid bonding technology of Mg and Al

ABSTRACT On the basis of laser-arc hybrid welding source, the welding assisted riveting hybrid bonding technology was adopted to realize the joining of AZ31B Mg and 6061 Al alloys. The fracture mechanism and the influence of the welding penetration on the mechanical properties were explored. The welded joint consisted of the Mg-Mg fusion zone and the Mg-Al reaction zone, the microstructure and the element distribution of these two areas were studied. The optimal mechanical property of the hybrid bonding joint was obtained at a penetration “H” of 2600 μm. The favorable stability of the joint was guaranteed by the “U”-shaped welded joints. The peak tensile shear load was 2.18 kN and the peak tensile strength was 173 MPa. A majority of homogeneous metals and a minority of dissimilar metals were found in the welded joints and the mechanical performance of the structure was enhanced by adding the rivets during the welding process.
