Influence of heat treatment on dynamic and physical properties of anthracite coal

The dynamic mechanical behaviours of coal exposed to elevated temperatures are important in mining engineering, especially in underground coal gasification. In this study, anthracite specimens were preheated up to 500°C in an oxygen-free atmosphere. Then, a series of laboratory tests, including mercury intrusion porosimetry, split Hopkinson pressure bar test and scanning electron microscopy, was conducted to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the physical and dynamic mechanical properties of coal. The results show that physical reactivity and pyrolysis have main roles before and after 300°C, respectively. Thus, the properties of coal related with temperature can be divided into two stages: stage 1 and stage 2. The mass-loss ratio, porosity and pore size distribution all vary more acutely in stage 2 than in stage 1. Coal gradually loses its dynamic bearing and anti-deformation capacities with increase in temperature, especially after 300°C.
