Abstract An algorithm is presented for the automatic detection of dynamic moiety pools within steady state metabolic subnetworks which may be embedded within larger dynamic networks. This is an aid in the quantitative development of the hierarchical structure of metabolic networks. The algorithm can also be used to test for the physical readability of a stoichiometric matrix of a closed metabolic network.
