Image fields for two-dimensional recording heads

The effect of a high permeability magnetic head on the field from a recorded medium has been determined for a head geometry having finite gap length and/or finite pole length. The required Green's functions for two dimensional head geometries are obtained by conformally mapping the head boundary into an infinite plane and applying the method of images. An example is given to show how the demagnetizing field of an arctangent transition in free space is modified by the presence of a head with and without a gap.
