Electron Scattering by Polyatomic Molecules: Recent Advances in Theory and Calculations

The numerous physical processes which occur when a beam or a swarm of electrons travels through a molecular gas are of considerable importance in a wide variety of apparently unrelated areas of molecular physics and physical chemistry. Thus, the importance of electron-impact excitation processes involving ground state molecules and molecules in metastable excited states has been recognized in the study of ionospheric and auroral processes in planetary atmospheres. Moreover, the discovery and development of discharge-pumped lasers has resulted in a corresponding increase of interest in several energy transfer processes in electron-molecular collisions because of their important role in creating the necessary population inversion1,2.
