A Rigorous Optical DPSK Transceiver Model and BER Calculation Using the KLSE Method

After developing a detailed model for DPSK transceivers, we present a covariance matrix based BER calculation method. We show that the transceiver imperfection and the linear fiber effects, such as chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion, can be incorporated into our model and our BER calculation method. With the developed BER calculation method, we assess the modulation bandwidth limitations, and compare the performance of RZ-DPSK with NRZ-DPSK for a back-to-back 40 Gb/s DPSK system.
