Dual-channel-spacing phased-array waveguide grating multi/demultiplexers

A novel multi/demultiplexer with dual-channel-spacing operation has been demonstrated for the first time, by utilizing the asymmetric I/O-port feature of a phased-array waveguide grating device. The multi/demultiplexer operates at both constant-wavelength (2 nm) and constant-frequency (200 GHz) channel-spacing standards. The center wavelength/frequency is adaptive to processing variations and can be alterable in unit of 0.4 nm and 50 GHz, respectively. The device exhibits a low fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 4.8-5.2 dB and a crosstalk rejection better than -20 dB. This dual-channel-sparing WDM multi/demultiplexer device offers good performance, flexibility and integratability. It can serve as a key integrated device for dense WDM systems.
