ELECTRICAL RESPONSE OF TWO-PHASE SOIL: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS

The theoretical developments leading to the generalized model for electrical response of 2-phase soils is described in the paper, which shows the tensorial character of the general formation factor. Effects of particle concentration and relative permittivities of the constituents on the electrical response of soils are described, and based on the theoretical results, potential applications are described. The paper also examines geotechnical applications using experimental data, and important limitations of electrical methods of characterizing soil behavior are illustrated. It is noted that solutions presented in the paper provide the basis for advances in the design and use of in-situ soil-testing devices.
